What is the best way to learn electric guitar?

So you want to learn to play electric guitar? Great choice! Personally, I have been playing and learning for the better part of 20 years. Electric guitar is such a great instrument with so many different styles available. I would like to share my experiences with you and hopefully give you some good information on the best way to learn electric guitar.

What is your passion?

The first thing you should think about is what is your favorite style of music? Would it be jazz, blues, soft rock, hard rock, country, or even heavy metal? When you really know what kind of style you like, stick with and learn music in this style. It makes it a much more enjoyable experience. You can expand your genres and styles once you get some experience. Of course, there are fundamentals to playing the guitar the covers all the genres of music, but it makes it a lot more fun when you’re learning on styles that you love.

A great way to start

If you’re not quite sure of the genre of music to learn, I would recommend starting with classic pop rock music ,as there is so much material available to learn with and it covers a little of many different styles of guitar, but mostly the basics.  Some good classic examples to learn guitar on would be songs from The Beatles, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Journey, Thin Lizzy and Aerosmith all the way up to Nirvana, Maroon 5, and other more modern guitar based pop rock. Once you decide the style of guitar you want to start with, you need to find a good guitar school or private teacher to take lessons from. Usually lessons can range between 40-60 dollars per hour.  As you can see, private lessons can get a little expensive, so what are the alternatives for learning to play?

The best way to learn

When I started learning as a teenager, there were not nearly as many alternatives to learning as there is today.  A very good choice to start with would be a learning system on DVD or CD with accompanying books. This a great way to learn as you can go over the lessons time and time again, and you can learn at your own pace without expensive private lessons. Once you start learning electric guitar and get beyond the basics, some unbelievable learning tools are at your disposal, such as digital sheet music, and graphics of guitar necks with real time animation of playing a song along with a CD. Can you believe it? I was astonished when I first saw this incredible tool. There are a lot of learning packages that all claim to offer the best way to learn electric guitar, but be sure to review everything they offer, and make sure they have a money back guarantee of some kind if you’re not satisfied. Good luck on your musical quest for the best way of learning electric guitar!
